"In every walk with nature one receives far more than he seeks." - John Muir
“You must live in the present, launch yourself on every wave, find your eternity in each moment. Fools stand on their island of opportunities and look toward another land. There is no other land; there is no other life but this.” - Henry David Thoreau June 22, 2013 - Algonquin Grove - Settler's Cabin Park - Pittsburgh, PAWelcome to the website for the 5th Annual "Hell Hath No Hurry" Trail Challenge. This low key event is aimed towards those who like to go into the woods and see what they are made of. The event takes place in Settler's Cabin Park near the Pittsburgh International Airport during the early summer, expect temperatures that will range from low 70's and sun to hazy hot and humid. This event is low-key and personal, but has hand crafted finishers awards and a top notch aid station.
This year brings yet another new format for racing and provides people a platform to do something "Epic". The main event this year is a 4, 8, and 12 hour endurance race. All runners will be traversing the same 5-6 mile loop as many times as they can in their respective time period. The winners of each category are those who have completed the most miles in the allotted time period. Additionally, There is going to be a 5-6 mile trail race. This event is going to transverse the same loop that the 4/8/12 hour runners will be running, but they will only be doing the loop once. This event will serve as an introduction to the event and trails it utilizes. It will also provide a faster option to come out and support the event without having to commit an entire day.
My philosophy with timed events is that they force participants to rethink race strategies. Rather than pushing yourself to a clear mile marker, racers will have to pace themselves to endure the entire duration of the event. Additionally, it allows slower and less experienced runners a venue to come out and push themselves to a personal goal without having to worry about timing out and/or not meeting a cut off. The final results only list the runners name and total number of miles completed, times are not listed.
If this event sounds like something you'd like to try please sign up and see what you got in you. I do this race to promote the trails in Settlers Cabin park and to provide a trail running venue in Pittsburgh that is accessible to all levels of fitness. If you have questions / comments or concerns please email me by clicking on my name below. Also, if you are interested in volunteering, send me an email. All volunteers get a shirt, free entry to the next years event, and the gratitude of other ultra runners. See you on the trails.
Sincerely,
Race Director |
